On behalf of HJOG Editorial Board and the Executive Board of the Hellenic Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (HSOG), we are happy and proud to present an overview of two successful years of the HJOG English - language edition.

HSOG has a long history in publication of scientific journals, dating back to 1988 when the first issue of its Greek - language ‘Hellenic Obstetrics and Gynecology’ was brought out. In 2001, the Journal title was changed to ‘Hellenic Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology’, which title it has retained to this day. Throughout these years, HJOG has been a fundamental component in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Greece, its constant objective being the wide - ranging progress, upgrading and dissemination of medical knowledge. It was thus inevitable that the Journal should evolve and enter a new phase in its publishing history with the launching of an edition published in English.

This is an important development that will establish the Journal internationally and increase its impact on the international scientific literature. Even more significantly, the guaranteed quality of its scientific content will provide an invaluable source of information in the field of Medicine.

HJOG is an international journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology dedicated to the publication of scientific articles related to all aspects of Obstetrics, Gynecology and women’s health and, as a globally recognized journal, it receives submissions from round the world.

A rigorous peer review process and fast publication ensure that only manuscripts of the highest quality are published in a timely manner. Access to the HJOG is also available based on the Open Access Policy of our Journal, providing the full text of all published articles. Moreover, our Editorial Board, composed of frequently cited researchers from all over the world, provides a platform for high - quality scientific works of broad interest addressing the important challenges and advances that are now occurring globally in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

At this point there should be special reference to the HJOG website: http://www.hjog.org. While the Journal is distributed in printed form and sent by mail to around 1,300 Obstetricians - Gynecologists who are members of the Hellenic Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, it is the HJOG website that constitutes the all - important direct link with the entire world, a vital channel through which the Journal can come in contact and communicate at any moment with the global scientific community. In order to further promote these capabilities, over the past few months, the Journal’s new website has been undergoing preparation for the potential of including an automated system for article submissions.

Google analytics started to document HJOG website traffic on February 19, 2015. To our immense satisfaction, we discovered that Google analytics had documented the impressive number of 9,000 views during the first 9 months (until November 18, 2015). During this period of time, scientists from 127 countries round the world visited our website.

Figure 1 depicts the 20 countries registering the highest number of views. In the top two are Greece and the United States with an almost equal number of views, these two countries constituting approximately 50% of our website traffic. It is also noteworthy that 3 out of 4 views were from outside Greece.

Figure 2 shows the increase, per month, in the number of countries from which our website views originate.

Figure 3 depicts the origin of views from Greece based on the data of Google analytics. The overwhelming majority came from the broader area of Athens and the rest from 13 other cities and towns of the country.

type of articles

During these first two years of the Journal’s English - language edition, a considerable number of interesting articles have been published which covered the entire spectrum of Obstetrics - Gynecology. Among the published articles there have been Reviews and Meta - analysis, Research articles, Case reports, Letters to the Editor and Editorials (Figure 4), which dealt with issues concerning general obstetrics, maternal and fetal medicine, general gynecology, basic sciences, gynecological oncology, infections, assisted reproduction, urogynecology, and social medicine.

As mentioned, HJOG is the official Journal of the Hellenic Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology and naturally its main source of article submissions is Greece. However, since the first year of the Journal’s English - language edition it has hosted a number of articles submitted by scientists abroad, and most particularly, from the United Kingdom and India. Thus, as a medical journal of high quality and reliability and of global scope, it is now capable of playing a role in the world of science, this being accomplished by linking researchers and clinicians, universities and institutions and aiming at the ever greater expansion of medical knowledge through major discoveries and innovative procedures whose principal purpose is to bridge the gap between theory and practice and, above all, to safeguard and promote the well - being of motherhood and women’s health.

Having devoted much effort, resolve and enthusiasm to the first 8 issues of the HJOG English - language edition, HSOG, with already a long and impressive history behind it, presses ahead. Its goal is to make a substantial impact on the field of medicine worldwide by attracting and multiplying submission of the highest excellence of articles, while also placing great emphasis on continuing research. This will both broaden the scope of the Journal and enable it to be indexed in international databases, such as PubMed. Needless to say, however, such an ambitious project can come to fruition only through a great amount of focus and commitment on our part as well as your own invaluable endeavor and contribution. What we have all accomplished so far demonstrates that we are working in the right direction.

Yet another year lies ahead of trials and challenges - but also of tremendous hope, expectations and aspirations and, not least, of a huge sense of fulfillment and pride in the various obstacles that have been overcome and the many aims that have been accomplished. We look forward to ever greater successes and achievements in the months and years to come and, most importantly, count on all our many colleagues, contributors, collaborators and supporters to back and sustain us in the furtherance of medical knowledge and knowhow.
