Inherited and acquired thrombophilia, included in the term thrombophilia, are implicated in the pathogenesis of thromboembolic disease as well as pregnancy complications, including recurrent abortions, intrauterine fetal demise, preeclampsia and abruptio placentae. The clotting mechanism and its disorders are currently a field of intense research.
