George Daskalakis, Marianna Theodora, Sofia Koura, Dimitrios Loutradis, Vasilios Pergialiotis

The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic caused disruption of daily activities in almost every aspect of life1. Epidemiological reflexes were criticized by many as inadequate as the World Health Organization characterized COVID-19 as a pandemic two months after the initial reports of a cluster of cases of pneumonia in Wuhan2. In a national level governmental reflexes across the world varied significantly and countries that acted proactively effectively kept the prevalence of the disease in acceptable levels …

Diagnosis and management of Ogilvie’s Syndrome post Caesarean Section.

Leah Hawkins, Sunny Ajayi

A 36-year-old woman presented to maternity unit two days post caesarean section (CS) with abdominal distension, pain and constipation. She was found to be septic on admission. Imaging demonstrated dilated bowel loops without an identifiable site of obstruction highlighting Ogilvie’s syndrome (OS) as the cause of her symptoms. Hospital acquired pneumonia (HAP) was identified as the source of infection with accompanying right sided lower lobe collapse. She was reviewed by multiple specialties to aid management …

A case of meconium peritonitis due to bowel perforation diagnosed at anomaly scan at 20 weeks.

Prabha Sinha, Shabnum Sibtain, Hakmi Aoun

Meconium peritonitis is a rare condition in a fetus which occurs due to perforation of the bowel in the antenatal period. It has serious neonatal consequences resulting in death if the diagnosis is delayed soon after delivery. However, its detection is difficult as the presentation is very variable. A case of meconium peritonitis and pseudocyst detected in a fetus at 33 weeks and 2 days of gestation is discussed regarding its diagnosis and management…

High levels of ca125 in a patient with large uterine fibroid.

Konstantinos Zacharis, Konstantinos Dafopoulos

Uterine leiomyomas, also known as uterine fibroids, are the most common benign tumors of the female genital tract and affect 60 to 80% of women at their reproductive age. Although elevated tumor markers may be measured in benign gynaecological diseases, the association of uterine fibroids with increased levels of serum cancer antigen 125 (CA125) has not been proven to date. In the present case report we present a rare case of a 21-year-old Caucasian woman attended to our outpatient department

Music as a mean to improve diagnostic accuracy of antenatal CTG

Loutradis Dimitris

Maternal quality of life during the antenatal period is of crucial importance as pregnancy is one of the finest periods throughout the life of a woman. Antenatal testing and anticipation of the results may, however, be stressful for some women. Fetal cardiotocography is routinely performed during the third trimester of pregnancy in Greece, however, its results are not always unequivocal. It is believed that maternal anxiety may, partially, affect fetal heart rate and result in cardiotocographic alterations that can erroneously result in an unnecessary increase of cases of induced labor …

Post Partum Hemorrhage – Mini Review

Charalampos Voros, Kalliopi Pappa

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is an obstetric emergency. It is one of the top causes of maternal mortality in both high and low income countries, although the absolute risk of death from PPH is much lower in high-income countries. Several risk factors predispose to the development of PPH including prolonged labor, precipitous labor, uterine distension. In 2017, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists revised the definition of PPH to help guide its management. In the present mini-review we focus on specific medical and minimally invasive interventions, and surgical interventions at laparotomy…

We included 67 consecutive infertile women of Caucasian origin who were operated laparoscopically in our Gynecological Endoscopy Unit for endometriosis, and 96 women participated as control group…
